Anyone reload Frangible M-160 108.5 Grain in 30-06? I am looking for any information on these rounds. Any reloading data will be helpful too. Thank you

Highly unlikely you find M160 bullets for reloading. Not generally available. However, nothing is totally impossible. Use 110 grain data. Won't cycle an M1 Rifle though.

I have relaoded several using very light power charges with SR4759. At short range, they will make a gong target ring as well as a regular bullet. I like them because they are cheap and less likely to stray off the range.

SR4759 is a pistol powder. For this type of round you're looking at less then 11 grains. ![]() This type of load is danger prone. If you make a mistake and drop a normal charge of this you will blow up your Garand and whoever is holding it. The reloader must be diligent to the extreme when working these type of loads. Eric |

This just isn't so. In fact using SR4759 for light rifle loads is one one the advertised features for this powder. Refer to IMR website and you will see.

Try dropping 45-50 grains behind a 150gr bullet and watch the rifle disassemble. Eric |

Can these rounds be loaded to normal specs or will they just explode because of the pressure? I have heard rumors that they were use in machine guns in bombers for practice against armored fighter planes. The planes being shot would not supposedly do any damage. If so they would have had to be loaded to somewhat normal specs to function the gun. Is any of that true?

Frangible bullets would still damage even the heaviest armored aircraft ( that could fly). Also, most bombers used .50 caliber M2 machineguns. Sounds like a tall tale to me. Last edited by ismith; 12-26-2009 at 02:08 PM. |

For those of you curious about the history of these rounds, google "operation pinball" and you will see the WW2 development of the rounds and armored aircraft used to train aerial gunners.
Yes, the rounds are available from hi tech for a pretty good price. I have often thought of buying several thousand to load up for the 1903's for inexspensive plinking. Can anyone who has actually used them attest to accuracy? |
