Default Garand 8620 steel and the <> diamond markings

I was curious to see if anyone here knows the specifics about the 8620 steel <> diamond markings found on the -12, -18, and some -19 bolts, as well as receivers starting in 1943, and lasting until around receiver revision -32. After some time of use, the <> symbol disappeared from bolts and receivers around mid 1944. So what happened? Did the steel content change, or did the ordnance department just have them stop stamping the symbol? Would this help link the few specific heat lots of -19 bolts with the <> as earlier production -19 bolts (and -18 with <>) (April-May/June 44?) before the <> stamping was eliminated?
