Default 1903 USMC J Unertl scope

Were the J Unertl scopes on the 1903 USMC rifles only 8X? Or were they ever issued with higher power magnification?

The USMC J Unertl scopes from the WWII era were 8X.

If there were any purchased, I don't think any of us have found the document that proves it.

Might help to know where you're going with this? John answered the question as you asked it, "on a 1903" 8X is it. Yes, Unertl scopes were made in higher magnification, yes, some may have been issued post WWII.... but "not on a 1903".

I have seen a higher magnification eyepiece on a WWII USMC Unertl scope. But I do not believe that it was original to the scope.

I am informed by knowledgeable persons that post-WWII Unertl scopes with higher magnification were fitted to various rifles by the military on into the Vietnam era. But I have no additional information in that regard.

Hope this helps.

An eye piece or marked lock ring could have been fitted by the scope owner in different magnification.

Whats harder to do is to change or create the USMC SNIPER marking at the serial number.

That is such a shame to ruin a nice vintage scope by doing that.
