Did they make different styles of the magazine pouches in WWII? I picked up a 1943 mag pouch at the gun show not even realizing it has that button in it that will scratch and dent the stock pretty bad. I've seen on ebay a style that had two loops rather than the one one big loop mine is.

If you are concerned about the button scratching the stock, I have put a small piece of electrical tape over the buttons that contacts the stock. I'm sure other tape would work too.

Those pouches were never intended to be put on the stock...all were for the belt.

Only the two were made . The one with two loops will not fit on a Carbine Stock . I just put a piece of tape on the inside of the loop over the snap . Never had a problem . REMEMBER , Your not going into Combat with your Rifle . Bob

Run the sling under the pouch where the button is.

Not counting the 30-rounder pouch, there were actually three different styles. Yours is a Type 1 also known as the "stock pouch" for obvious reasons. Apparently some of them were not stamped US. I've got a couple in my collection. Your pouch looks legit.
The one with the two loops is a Type 2 that also carries Garand clips and fit on web belts. These don't fit on a M1 Carbine stock though they are spotted occasionally on M1A1's wire stocks. There are also Type IIIa and Type IIIb pouches, which were mostly used by the Marines and will also hold 1911 mags. These can fit on wooden stocks. Velcro strips (the fluffy side) can also protect the stock. Good luck getting a pouch to fit nicely on your stock. I have heard that soaking the pouch and then stretching it down on a beater stock will work. I guess it depends how "fat" your stock is. Last edited by dnikkor; 11-12-2019 at 12:40 PM. Reason: typo |

That metal button is actually half of a "snap" like above the zipper fly of a lot of jeans. The other half was on the web belt just to the wearers left of the buckle. Many of those belts were marked "US" in large letters.

Agreed. A small patch of duct tape is what I use on inside of a beater USGI pouch.
