I ordered this NM M1A directly from Springfield Armory back in around 1988 and asked for the nicest possible wood along with the best USGI parts that they had in stock. My FFL and a credit card took care of the rest. An ARMS mount and Kahles 10X scope make it a wonderful shooting rifle.

I think the M14's have a much more classic look with the wooden handguards. Wish they would have kept them standard! But, what can I say this was the transition from guns made of wood and steel to guns made with plastic and polymers!
