Story I heard about those is, they pulled them off 99.5% of the first SA production run after a few caught on fire in full auto fire.

They tossed them in the trash and a worker took them home to burn. Some collector got wind and managed to get the last handfull the guy had not burnt up.

The Springfield Armory museum still has a few T44E4 and early M14s with wood handguards.

I ordered this NM M1A directly from Springfield Armory back in around 1988 and asked for the nicest possible wood along with the best USGI parts that they had in stock. My FFL and a credit card took care of the rest. An ARMS mount and Kahles 10X scope make it a wonderful shooting rifle.

Looks good! But that scope seems to sit pretty high - do you use a cheek pad, or do you shoot from the hip?

I use a cheek pad but I don't leave it attached to the stock. Those are actually medium height ARMS rings. I also use a Leupold 3.5X10 tactical scope on the same rifle and since it has a bigger objective lens it needs the extra clearance. The only real disadvantage I have found with the ARMS system is that with the hooded NM rear sight it is impossible to see through the "tunnel" ARMS provided to use the iron sights with the scope installed. I think the M14's have a much more classic look with the wooden handguards. Wish they would have kept them standard! But, what can I say this was the transition from guns made of wood and steel to guns made with plastic and polymers!
