I read an article somewhere (I can't find it now, of course) written by a man who was production supervisor for primer manufacture at CCI for 20 years. It had more information on primers than most people would want to know. His bottom line advice was to use the primers the loading books recommend. I don't need to waste any of my few remaining brain cells on the question.

Using the chart snipped from Saami

A rifle primer can be .136 tall max...........you add .008 (space between face and primer) that equils.............144"

When you look at the chart the max depth for the primer pocket is .132"

What happens to the .012"........

I'm not trying to be a troll..............I'd really like to understand this
No idea, I was wondering the same thing.

But possibly, the difference is, the primer height in the SAAMI specs, includes the anvil ears protruding from the cup. And when inserted, the anvil ears are pushed in to be flush with the edge of the cup to ensure sold anvil to case contact.

But that would stop the "discussion" among a bunch of stiff necked, stubborn, "my way is the only way", "reloaders"...
