I believe you also get discounts if you use stamps.com

I've got a stamps.com account and use it for small parts (first class). I'll check it this week to see about priority mail discounts. down side of stamps.com is a monthly fee. I can't remember what I pay, but it's $15 or $17

yeah it looks like USPS.com eliminated the commercial rate pricing this week for those of us who had accounts there :-( Paypal still gets the nice commercial discount rates though, probably because of the tremendous volume so I'll be using them for sure now. Too bad they still aren't offering us the regional rate box options though.
you don't need to do it through paypal, you can setup an account right on USPS.com and get the same discounts and pay with credit/debit cards or paypal. You can also order the flat rate and regional rate boxes for free right on the site. The regional rate boxes are about the same size as flat rate but are cheaper if you're not going clear across the country and they also get there in about 2 days. Best shipping deal going, but only available online.
I have USPS and Paypal accounts. Paypal is the cheapest . Before, their rates are the same but lately USPS cost more than Paypal by $ 0.20-0.30 more. You cannot print First Class shipping labels at USPS though. Instead of using the regular Flat rate boxes, use the Regional flat rate boxes instead ( size A, B ). You can save as much as 40 %. They're available online and you have to order boxes (free) from the website.

Using PayPal is much better than the USPS website. Not only do I get a discount on Flat Rate boxes, but also on first class mail. And I get tracking information to boot.

I just keep a small amount of money, or draw upon an account that has very little in it.

So, like ebay, I use it as a necessary evil at times
