Default Looking on info on comps for a rifle build

OK here's the situation… I'm looking to get another Garand and tailoring it towards a competition rifle. I'm trying to figure out what competitions allow what modifications and it's spinning my head.

So here's what I'm looking to do:

Krieger match barrel
NM sights
Trigger job
Gas cylinder mod
Unitizing the stock
possible glass bedding
possible laminated stock

2016 time frame of purchase and mods to be made.

I know of the JC Garand matches and CMP matches. Are there also NRA matches?

Sorry it just gets so confusing.

I'm leaning to purchase the rifle from DGR at the moment. Right now I'm in the saving up phase.

Your rifle is not compliant with CMP JC Garand match rules because of all the mods you're making to it.

Your rifle IS compliant with both CMP and NRA Service Rifle rules.

Long story short, you can shoot your rifle in any of these matches:
Any local CMP Excellence In Competition Match (aka leg matches)
Any of the CMP National Trophy Matches at Camp Perry
Any local NRA Highpower Rifle match (there are hundreds every weekend around the country)
The NRA National Highpower Rifle Championships at Camp Perry.

You cannot shoot your rifle in any of these matches
Local CMP Garand/Vintage Rifle matches
The CMP National JC Garand Match at Camp Perry
The JG Garand Matches at the CMP Eastern and Western Games

I think you're on the right track with a very versatile rifle that you can get a lot of use out of it and will also be very competitive.

I recommend joining this forum: www.nationalmatch.us and getting more info on Highpower Rifle since it sounds you're relatively new to this.

One more thing, make sure you read CMP Service Rifle Rules 6.1.1, 6.1.2, and 6.2.1 and share them with whoever is going to do your work (if that's not you).

That way you don't do anything that is against the rules without knowing it.

Your modified M1 can be used in a local J.C. Garand Match in the " Unlimited Garand " catagory. Even with all the up-grades you will still be handicapped shooting against the AR guys. Eddie

I believe aloreman is correct.I had the CMP custom shop put together the same rifle as you outlined except I used a heavy barrel and I don't think it would make the unlimited weight restriction even without the lead in the buttstock. This wasn't an issue for me as my only intention was to use it for fun in NRA XTC.Before purchasing a complete rifle from DGR,I would consider going the route I did.I have no doubt that DGR builds an exceptional rifle but the prices look to be almost double what my cost was.If you have any questions you can pm me.

Thanks guys! Appreciate the comments and insight.

Valkrider - Unfortunately I do tinker with my firearms BUT my time, knowledge, space and skill level is very limited with regards to doing a full build myself. I will definitely save money but in all honesty I'll never get the project done.

My work is demanding
I have small children so I like to spend time with them
I live in an apartment with limited space for working on firearms.

I can go without the laminated stock. It was a thought but I wasn't 100% set on it.

You have lots of time and have another Garand to use in the GSM

.308 or 30-06--?
Krieger or Douglas barrel--?
NM sights -- yes
Trigger job--yes
Gas cylinder mod--yes
glass bedding--yes
Stock--?

Call or email the CMP Custom shop and there are other recommended forum members that offer this service.

Good luck, I pick up my .308 Douglas barreled M1 NM rifle next weekend and it took me 2 1/2 years.

I didn't build the rifle,CMP custom shop did.I used a very nice service grade as a donor, aquired the few extra parts needed and sent it all to them for the national match upgrades/assembly.IIRC, the armorer who built my rifle was CHRIS and he did an excellent job.
