Default unfired garands @ anniston

thanks to alrettke for these pictures and info:

Here are a few pictures and my personal opinions of the unissued Garands found on 10-10-09 at the GCA convention. This picture was taken at 1249 hours and there were three racks of unfired Garands with nearly 50 on each:

They had VCI wrap on the front/rear sights, that slightly fuzzy & powerdery preservative and most still had the rust preventative tubes in the barrels:

About one hour later, the table I was at found fourteen unissued rifles at the bottom of the pallet we were working:

The top of this pallet was all postwar rifles, mainly all of them like new. We found at about 40 that would have been correct/collector if not for a mismatched trigger group, stock or op rod. There were about 40 correct/collectors. There were lots of beautiful rifles that anyone will be VERY happy with as a service grade.

We also had pallets of very used rifles, one entire pallet must have come from Central America - they were parts only. During the day, out of more than 400 rifles, we found no IHCs, two 6 mills with ratty old NM barrels and a half-dozen WRAs. One or two were worth buying, one had a WRA-GHD stock with two op rod holes punched all the way through the other side.

I would estimate the CMP ended up with just about 200 unfired Garands. I would further estimate 175 were SA and 25 were HRA. I helped a collector find a late HRA with a LMR barrel, I believe it was the only one. This ratio of unfireds is directly opposite of the nice postwar rifles we worked, the vast majority of those were HRA.

It was a long tiring day but well worth it.

Sooooooo, um, ah, does anyone happen to know (in detail) what the overnight security is like at Anniston?

If I got one of those unissued Garands I'd have to clean it up & shoot it, & I'm not wealthy enough to intentionally reduce the value of my investments like that.

Therefore I'll reluctantly leave those unissued babies to you wealthier & more disciplined collectors.
