Default M1a flash hider

Looking to buy a flash hider & note that prices run from $40 to well over $100. Is one better than another & if so why?

If buying used, make sure it doesn’t have excessive gas cutting.

At the low end you're getting a commercial FH. While the higher priced will be USGI, which is preferred by most

USGI may be preferred but is there any performance difference between a commercial flash hider and a USGI? I have 2 rifles with NM reamed flash hiders one is commercial one is USGI both function fine. i assume the commercial one is 2 piece and the USGI is a single piece

One is cast, commercial and other is forged......Early USGI ones were cast but changed to forged

The flash suppressor must support the bayonet is likely why it is forged. There would
be tremendous stress on it during bayonet training/fighting so unless you plan to do any of these activities the cast unit will work same as forged.

There are other considerations.

One is the inside diameter. There came to be a thing called National Match ream. In that on the USGI guns used for matches, the armourers would ream the inside out a bit. I guess it was found the original tighter diameter was worse for accuracy.

Most aftermarket made ones have the NM ream diameter.
The only downside to the NM ream is it makes it incompatible with the USGI blank firing adapter. also Less chance of a bullet strike on a slightly not straight flash hider.

One other consideration is the sound, no not the bullet crack, but the m14 has a curious quirk in that the USGI flash hider will ring like a tuning fork when fired. Many will even ring when the bolt is let fly home. The cast replicas wonít ring for whatever reason.

The keepshooting m14 flash hider is a good part. Itís Taiwanese forged. It rings like a real one and has the NM ream. But some of them the color is slightly off from the metal used on some USGI and commercial barrels, itís not bad but a close look will note that. But itís 30 bucks for a forged part.
