Consider buying a drill rifle and recovering it. If you pick out the right one it will work out cheaper with a little more effort and you won't be drilling into an existing rifle to add the scope mount.

Here is a good write-up on recovering one:

We went yesterday morning and, like PH reported, there were ten at opening. Of the ten, six were very nice Remingtons with good bores. The one I got was a 12/43 with a 0 and 1 on the tag. The other four had dark bores and the wood was not as nice. The six nice ones went fast. We left around 0930 and went back an hour before closing. The four with dark bores were still on the racks but there was one with a good bore and ME/TE in the rack. I don't know if it was put out later in the day or if someone changed their mind in the morning. The M1s were hit or miss. If you had $2,000-$3,000, they have some nice correct rifles. PH's posts are the best source of intel. He is always spot on.

This was my first trip to the new store. It is much smaller than the old one and gets crowded in a hurry. Good news is Mike is there waiting on people and available for help. I wish we could have talked to him more, but it was too busy. As always, everyone at CMP was very friendly and helpful.

One thing that I really enjoyed was the number of youth there. CMP was hosting a competition in the same building and there were hundreds of teenagers. They were all respectful and it was good to see so many taking an interest in the M1s.

In regards to RG. Don't let high TE scare you...I have a 66SA barrel on one of mine that's almost a 6 and MW of 1+ shoots pretty darn well.

I snagged up a great RG this morning. 71k serial with a 44 barrel, wra lower band, and NFR stock. Could not have been happier.
