Default Experimental 03a3

I was reading about the 03a3 and saw that the navy experimented with 03a3's with 15 shot magazines installed.is this work still preformed or are there any gunsmiths that do this

An 03A3 would be an unlikely candidate, but you could put a 1903 trigger guard on it and use an "Air Service" 25 round magazine, which replaces the standard detachable floorplate. This could be done by a private individual. No need for a gunsmith.
Authentic "Air Service" magazines are expensive and not easily found. I don't know if reproductions are/were made.

Hi Carriec,

I asked about it over at Ask Each Other section of the board

Coleman bought one from Numrick a while ago. He had to adjust his follower a bit by doing some filing. The follower I got looks like NOS- no issues!
My original thought was to buy a BAR mag. cut out the center of the stamped unit & weld or silver solder it together.
Saw a note in a book "The thin Red Line" that some 03 A3's were modified early in WW-2 so a sentry would have a few extra rounds to fire to give the resting grunts time to man their fighting holes.
Still want to try the BAR mag & spring idea!

He told me his worked, so I ordered one it's on my 03 now!
It was on sale at Christmas time!
No change to the rifle, but you do have to file the latch section a bit to lock up correctly.
. It is only a 10 round unit & you have to switch out your stamped trigger guard unit for a 03 milled trigger guard.
Mine jammed after the first five rounds- just gave the top round a push down & fired the other five. Second try it fired all 10!

A nice 1903 trigger guard unit will cost a few $ now, shop around!

Funny how the older guys STOP... Look at it, because they know there is something different ....but can't place it quickly!

Good Luck,
broom

Thanks for he feedback broom. I looked at those a long time ago and never got back to it due to the less than stellar reviews I was reading. May have to revisit that for fun. I have an A4 clone with the milled TG do easy enough to do.
