Default First Garand

Hi, I'm new to the forums and to the CMP in general. I took a trip from northeast Indiana to the North Store today and picked up my first M1 :-). I am planning on shooting it a lot so I went with the CMP Special and I couldn't be happier!

I also picked up two cans of loose Greek ammo. That should get me started ok :-)

Wood looks a little dry, but you do have a WINNER!

A little raw linseed or tung oil will quickly take care of the wood. I'm thinking CMP presents a REAL nice piece as a Special and it is a WWII veteran at that! Good shootin' at the range! (After you properly clean and lube her up!) And you are right, two cans of feed is just a start. Congrats and welcome aboard.

Nice looking gun, I didn't realize that you could get WW2 serial numbers in the Specials.

Congratulations; now get that gun to the range!

I was hoping to find a WW2 serial number. They had at least two more specials there in the WW2 SN range. One was newer than this, but another was something close to 103XXXX. The front sight was a tad loose on that one, plus there was a small gouge in the wood of the stock. Probably from someone mishandling it at the store.

I was expecting the rifle to be dry, but wow, it is dryer than the Sahara. I'm going to have to go get some grease after church this morning as all I have now is gun oil. I can't wait to get this thing lubed up properly and get it to the range!

Can anyone recommend a good place to get garand clips cheaply? So far I only have the one the rifle came with and I think I can do better than the prices on cheaperthandirt and sportsmansguide.

Overall I was very impressed by my expirience. The guys in the store could not have been nicer. I had my eye on a couple field grade H&R's there so I may be back sooner than I thought! :-)
