I guess this is a contender for auction of the year. Nice that CMP can still get special items.

I would nominate it for the coolest item in the 10 years I've been following the CMP auctions.....

USMC history and rare item....I'm guessing well into 5 figures.

WAAAY out of my league.

The CMP received 40 of these guns, so we'll see more of them pop up over the next few years

Pretty impressive the CMP has 40 of the 52 that were made for the USMC!

Makes it even more interesting because the Corps refuses to release anything and most stuff gets destroyed. When it came time for these rifles to be demilled, the Army requested them from the Corps, then turned around and transfered them to the CMP.

Also, 2 XM3's were shipped to Benning for Army testing almost a decade ago. Would have been interesting if the Army had adopted the XM3, but they decided to stick with their long action guns. I know where one of those Army XM3's is (currently in a private collection), but no idea what happened to the other one.

I hope the prices on these come down a little as they release them, would love to add one to my collection! They still have hundreds of the Unertl scopes in their warehouse, so can take my time in picking up one of those.

40? How do you know they got 40?

Is this a reliable number or just a rumor?

It is a very reliable number, not a rumor. I called/emailed Mr. Hall at the CMP back in May 2014 and I was told they received 40 rifles in various states of completion (some full kits, some missing night vision, some just the rifle only, etc.). They received a pallet of XM3's on the morning of May 7, 2014.

During this time I was looking for rifle number S6533990, which is the rifle that just sold at auction a few weeks ago. My platoon had this rifle in Fallujah, Iraq and I'm the person who won the auction. I'm currently waiting for my buddy (the sniper who was issued the rifle) to send me pics of the gun during our deployment.

Steve Reichert also documents the transfer of the XM3's from the Corps to the Army to the CMP on his website - http://stevereicherttraining.com/darpa-xm3/
