Default New Discovery at NARA, Documentation on Alvin York's M1911

I'll keep this brief.

We all love history. We all know the story of Alvin York and using his M1911 to dispatch several Germans during the World War. We also know it was incorrectly depicted that he used a Luger in that iconic scene from the movie "Sergeant York" starring Gary Cooper.

You may even know this serial number is known. There has been some chatter about it.

Well, theres's a strong possibility you've only seen the citation about the documentation and not the documentation itself.

Here is the documentation from Archives II at College Park.

We're making new discoveries everyday in small arms data mining.

You can read about the documents or you can read THE documents.

Just think, there was no mention of the pistol being stolen in 1921. If you think the Office of Chief of Ordnance didn't record lost, stolen or missing firearms and maintain those records. You would be wrong.

The CMP is getting ready to release the last batch of M1911s the military has stored for the past several decades. Perhaps this pistol will show up in the future. If it is in that batch, slim chance but if it is, I doubt it's 100% correct, matching parts and original finish.

Who knows? Time will tell.

Enjoy!

(The curator of the Alvin York National Historic site was sent copies and he was happy to receive them).
