Photo #6 shows a ditched B29 with tail markings V square 50.

I have done extensive (for my abilities) research on this plane and the rescuing destroyer. I have the B29 pilot's pistol and shoulder holster.

This plane, "Umbriago, Dat's My Boy", serial number 42-63447 was piloted by Lt. Lindsey M. "Sy" Silvester. Returning from a mission to bomb the Mitsubishi plant in Nagoya they ran out of fuel and ditched at 2316 hours on the night of December 13, 1944. Eleven crew members were spotted in three rafts by a PBY "Dumbo" piloted by LT. (jg) A. H. Crocker, III at 1155 hours December 14 at Lat. 15 degrees, 48' N and Long. 144 degrees, 24 ' E. All 11 crew members survived and were rescued by USS Cummings DD 365 at approx. 1630 on December 14, 1944. The pland remained floating due to the empty fuel tanks and had to be sank by gunfire from the Cummings.

The pilot gave his 1911A1 Ithaca and shoulder holster to the rescuing destroyer USS Cummings DD265 Executive Officer, Lt. Edward Hebditch as a token of appreciation

I have the accident report on the B29, the PBY "Dumbo" report on the sighting, the deck logs of the Cummings and the Ithaca shipping document on the pistol. I also have photos of the ditched plane, USS Cummings, Edward "Ted" Hebditch.

I tried to obtain more info from Lindsey Silvester but he is deceased. I spoke to his son about the pistol. He said he would search his father's records and get back to me. I have not heard from him.

Does anyone know where I can obtain more provenance on this pistol?
