Default Recent dupage HRA stocks

Here is a pic of the stocks I just received. Bottom One is in good shape with minimal damage, the other one has a lot of dings, dents and cracks... What wood is the top one? Thanks

If they are HRA, they are both walnut.

One more question. Would regular boiled linseed oil be the best treatment after sanding the stock? I would really like that tiger stripe to pop. Thank you

Mine looked rough when I opened it up but it turned out just about perfect. I stripped it and steamed what dents I could. Then stained with my own mixture. 6 coats of blo.

What stain mixture did you use? I have minwax walnut, ebony, early American and Bombay mahogany.

So I use minwax Gunstock and dark walnut. I then start with the gunstock and then add a little dark until it gets the right color. Let it dry two day and then add either a little gunstock or a little dark until you get the rift cooler. Iíll post a pic when I get back into town and you can see. I think it looks good.

What if I applied blo without staining? Would it make the grain pop in that stock or do I need to stain it first?
