Well what this could be too, is possibly being reported to Crane as being in Albany's inventory.

Crane kept track of all USMC Serials, just like RIA did for the Army back then at the same time. So that might play into this somehow too.

What I mean of this is, all USMC units will report their serials to Crane. We did this even when I was in, and talking with some current Marine Commanding Officers they still send their weapons serial reports to Crane every so often.

So this report might be stating that it was reported to Crane as being in Albany's inventory in 1975. I don't know. Just a guess. I'm not into this new stuff. I only started to research this in passing as I don't have one of these pistols. I just saw the A and thought Albany. So I sent off some emails.

But no, what I'm finding out is around 1974/75 the military went live with a way to track serial numbers. Basically the Army guy I use for my Freedom of info requests say that is when computers started to track it. So before this date unless you find a serial in the National ARchives you won't find it. But it's looking like any branch has their records from 1975 and up.

That is what I'm gathering so far.

I just talked to Marine Captain who did a lot of weapons transfers with Crane, the way he reads it is this:

He said he thinks the last location with the Navy is Crane, but it's being transferred from Crane to Albany. I should notate I ran this report with the Navy. So it would make sense the last location with the Navy was at Crane. But it was transferred from Crane to Albany and that is why the Navy has no other records of this serial past Crane.

So otherwise

It transferred ownership like this:

1)Crane

2) Albany (1980) (pistol has 1981 rebuild date)

3) Anniston (1991)

4) CMP (2018)

Well.... obviously the "XFER" and "Last Loc" are the critical part to this...….
I wasn't involved in all this when I was in but your point to the ownership vs actual location of the item in question is a point to consider...and certainly possible. And the MC does fall under the Dept of the Navy.

Either way I appreciate your efforts!

I will shoot an email back to the person I got this report from as well, to ask for clarification. But it will be early next week I'm sure before I get a response.

Can we now call this one done and the A is for Albany? To me I think it's pretty much settled.
Great work! Yes, I think we can call this one for Albany.

It would take "clear and obvious" facts otherwise to overturn this call, ha!

Even before I got to this post, that was what I had figured out. The Xfer was out of Crane and to Albany in 1980. 1975 being a date when the records keeping started in that format. I think we can just about put this baby to bed as to what the A stands for.

Here is another A1 81 date coded 1911. It looks like they might have restored the serial number stamping when they restored it. https://imgur.com/gallery/BmGRHPZ

My buddy's has A 11 80 on his Remington-Rand.

I am not at all bitter that he sent his packet at the last possible moment and was one of the first people to get a gun. Nope, not bitter at all.
