Default Interesting Estate Sale Find

***Disappointment Disclaimer*******
I don't have any photos yet, will try to get some soon.

A friend went to an Estates Sale recently. He found several boxes of vintage ammo from the 50's and 60's which he purchased.

Upon opening one of the boxes he found about 20 rounds of wooden bullets with brass casings. They are 7.92mm. He looked up the head stamps and they appear to be Pre-WWII and WWII vintage ammo (1935, 1941 and 1944).
They still have a powder charge and are in very good condition.

Has anyone heard of their useage and are they rare?

I've never seen or heard of them but the pictures are pretty cool.

He picked them up at $4.00 per box

Useage? They are blanks. The hollow wooden bullet is to aid feeding and is designed to fragment/disappear on firing.

If German and the wood is red or purple, then it's probably Platzpatrone 33. It was often made from fired or rejected cases. I believe the Germans only packed them in 15rd boxes too

Other countries also made blanks out of fired or rejected brass, so the presence of German WWII headstamps wouldn't necessarily mean it's German ammo. Danish post-WWII blanks contain a lot of WWII and pre-WWII German headstamps.

IIRC, there was sometimes a muzzle attachment to split the wooden plug.
