Default I got a 1917 Eddystone today

Friend of mine went to TMP for the M1917 sales this morning and I convinced myself (with his help) to drive over and look.

Bought an Eddystone Ser #1270### Service Grade bright bore
Decent stock with about 3 stamps on it AA, 2 other rectangles with *IA and some other letters
2 proof P, one large one small and 3 small letters
Nice light park and no rust
Muzzle has old white paint on it
ME 1 and TE 2 R 9/18
E on most parts
W on some parts (Winchester?)

Anyways, I know nothing about the M1917 so my question is that the follower looks to be modified. It is beveled at the bolt so it doesn't stop the bolt on an empty magazine. I like this feature, but will it cause malfunction?
Any reason for this and is it common?

Sounds like a great shooter with that bore, rebuilds are possibly Augusta arsenal and Rock Island with inspector FK (Frank Krack) or EB (Elmer Bjurke).
The follower modification won't hurt a thing. A common trait on Canadian and Danish M1917's. I'm a bit surprised to see it on an American rifle, as I've read a nickle inserted in the rear accomplished the same result for our use.
Maybe others can explain the white paint.

I can take pictures and email
My phone and computer skills could cause a space time continuum
Did find a small sicker in the buttstock
And I'm really happy

Congrats. Post some pics when you can. An Eddystone is on my "want to buy" list.
