I remember seeing that those that buy an auction pistol would lose their allocation, but that seems unlikely if its pushed off 9-12 months...

I wondered early on which direction I would go given that option. Seeing what I could get or selecting whats behind door #2 sight unseen is not something I usually would choose myself, but at this point, we don't even know what's behind door #1 for auctions anyway, or what they might fetch.

You don't really lose your allocation. If you win an auction pistol, that pistol becomes your allocation. And for bidders
Given that the auction pistols will most likely be of somewhat higher intrinsic value, and could possibly have a pedigree (full match, provenance, or be from a limited production run from a certain manufacturer), I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the auction pistols bring a great deal of interest, as well as bringing fairly intense bidding activity.
A friend of mine said back at the beginning that he is waiting for the auction pistols, and never had any intention of mailing in for a random number. He will bid to win and if he's the auction winner, he will send his required paperwork.
