We are at my wife’s grandparents house looking through their belongings and found this in the basement. Am I correct to believe this is a ww1 scabbard for a 1903 rifle? How would they use these? How is the condition, and is it worth anything? My father in law does not remember what the story was for it. He believes it was found in a house they rented when he was a child.

It looks like the 1903 rifle scabbard. It is missing the straps. If you Google "1903 rifle scabbard leather images" you can see how the straps attach.

How long is it? A Krag carbine scabbard looks similar.

Cool find. Some Pecard's Antique Leather Dressing will help restore that.

It looks like a M1903 rifle scabbard to me, especially with the 11-18 date of inspection.

I agree with Mr. Beard. Looks like a 1904 pattern scabbard for the 1903 Springfield rifle made during WW1.
There is no brass sleeve for bolt. Those were later scabbards made for the M1 rifle and a shorter pattern for the M1 carbine during WW2. |

Remember at that time the U.S.Army still had a cavelry and mounted troops carried rifles. Eddie

I have a pic somewhere, but until then, this site shows the scabbard on the M1904 McClellan Saddle, and a lot more
