Thanks all. I emailed Customer Service. I will likely buy a couple of spares for my growing family of Garands.

whats concerning to me with the specials is that spring had to be inspected when assembled so how does a op rod spring break into 4 pieces between CMP and a detail strip inspection at home.
1. was the rifle fired by the owner before inspecting the rifle ?

Now i have received 4 rifles both SG and FG that had broken op rod springs. By the amount of gunk on and in the op rod channel I dont think these rifles where stripped and cleaned and reassembled so I doubt the spring was checked.
A email to CS resolved any issues.

If the cmp sent a CMP Special out the door with a broken spring thats just not good.

I have to correct my post.... This was a Service Grade IHC gun...not a CMP Special. My apologies for the mistake in my original post.

When I was a volunteer down there many yrs. ago the armorers just checked the rifle for function then it went for test fire, us volunteers pretty much stripped each rifle almost down to a barreled receiver, so it stands to reason we found more busted stuff than the paid by the rifle guys,, one of the reasons the guys I went there with we had a higher "pass" percentage than the armorers did. So if the rifle passed the test fire stage it was packed and shipped.
