High pressure liners were largely in use during the timeframe that the veteran served in the PTO (1944-1945) aboard the USS Allentown.

Took a look at your helmet collection link, very cool, you definitely are expert on these.

Far from an expert, but I have enjoyed researching and collecting some relatively inexpensive pieces. I haven't added anything to the collection in quite some time and have actually downsized somewhat over the last couple years.

FWIW...I'd bet that we see the helmet surface again on eBay. I'd be shocked if it was actually a legitimate auction result with a paying buyer. I haven't seen anything that leads me to believe that the helmet has been tied to a specific operation that would make it worth that type of money.

What happens on Ebay if a winning bidder doesn't pay up? Do they get the boot, or suspended, or something?

Typically nothing unless they are a repeat offender. The seller just reports the deadbeat bidder to eBay and relists. Shill bidding to drive the price up on an item also isn't out of the realm of possibility. Sometimes the shill unintentionally wins the auction.

The value has to be with that name. My ancestry account is expired right now. But the Navy and USMC rosters are on there.

But you can research these names on Ancestry and see where they were. He had to be part of something famous to command that price.
