Default M14 mag pouch question

On the sides of a u.s.g.i. Mag pouch there are a little pocket type thing and a snap with a small strap about 4 inches long. What are they used for? The pouch is from 1950, with the metal clip to keep the latch closed. Thanks. A photo would be nice too.

Sounds like a grenade attachment. I'm thinking the mag pouches I used had two of these things, one on each side.

That is where the frag grenades go. The little pocket it to hook the spoon on and the strap goes around the rest.

They went for more of an open bottom "cup" pouch later.

1st pic shows them in use, the second is on a dummy so you can clearly see them in use. Or maybe I have it backwards.....
