just like the garand about the last inch of the heel should rest firmly on the stock, then should be a very slight gap forward to where the receiver legs start

I would suggest a different stock.
It's not like M14 stocks are scarce, and you have one that fits well.

I found this one in a pawnshop. It has some great character and cartouches. I would hate just to toss it aside for another.

with 14 stocks, just find another, I probably have at least 10. Find someone with some, find the right one, and switch out for theirs. Unless your one of the people that are so interested in looks.

I bought this for looks. I wanted to replace the Springfield commercial stock with something that had some character. I really don't want t go spend a bunch of money on stocks just to find one that fits 100%.

I get that but if you buy 10 stocks and you get 1 to fit you are into it for more than what its worth.
