I guess it depends on who you are planning to go into combat with. To me sight protectors have one use - protecting the sight. I'm pretty darn sure that they all, including the USMC cover, were made for that purpose only. Did you ever see a globe on a 1917, M1 Garand or carbine; or any other battle rifle fielded over the last century?

No, but they usually have wings.

Hi S99VG,

Russian Mosin Nagant 91/30, M-38 & M-44 German H&K G-3 just to name a few!

I totally agree that the small (standard) sight cover is not a help, when actually shooting. The "Marine"model makes a lot more sense!

I like wings or EARS to protect the front sight also.

Good shooting,
broom

Don't have a pic but check this eBay listing showing both versions. You can see the difference.

Hi Shomway,

Big thanks for locating that picture!

We can SEE the big difference & usefulness, the larger protector makes.
I know the original larger ones are hard to find, but someone makes a nice repro. for about $50 or $60

With a little looking, I'm sure some one could beat that particular E-bay price.
I bought a standard (small one) for $6 at a local gun show.

That price is plain crazy! I picked up one off eBay from Europe for like $50.
Anyone interested might want to contact Bill Bentz. I know that he made repro USMC style covers and sight blades....

Hi Shomway,

I have the larger type on my M1903 and M1903 A3. They both have a number on the left side: C64157-4

Prices are established by past sales! What we used to call "dollars" are now only worthless, printed "greenies" that buy less and less. People who have a lot of greenies and want that sight cover, will whip out 190 greenies in a skinny minute!

Now that I have heard about the Marine sight covers, there are two issues that push prices up. One, they are rare and hard to find and two the magic name USMC. Anything connected even remotely to the Marine Corps will command bigger bucks.

Anyway, I learned here, that the low ones never were meant to be used in live fire. I always knew that they were not good to leave on for live fire. Now I hear here, that they are not to be used when firing. Done!
