Hi all,
In browsing the closed 1911 auctions I see wildly differing prices on these guns. Some, up to $7000. My question is; what are the things to look for to value these firearms? I’m assuming parts correctness, but the most expensive pistol I saw had a mismatched slide/frame. A similar, to my eye, pistol sold for $1700 in that same auction series. What are the things to look at when determining value? Personally, I’m looking forward the wide hammer, checkered mainspring housing, and a Colt/Colt slide and frame. Is this an “expensive” combination? |

If I was going to buy on auction the first thing I’d look for would be a secret stash of money

Just my humble opinion:
Approach the auctions this way: 1.Decide what you want (ie a "Shooter," a specific manunfacturer, etc).... 2. Decide your maximum you will pay. 3. Bid and expect to lose. Because to be honest, at times the pricing (bids) to the various pistols makes no sense. Some have unique and rare markings or history..... but most do not. So don't try to make rhyme/reason to the pricing.

My wife and I both went the auction route because we knew what we wanted. I got my conversation piece, a very early Ithaca slide with the brand and address on the opposite side of where it's supposed to be on a 1918 colt frame, both are parked and all of the parts are correct for a 1943 Ithaca. The colt frame does not have a serial number on it, instead it's 3 digits, but other indicators tell me it's a 1918 colt frame.
My wife got a very nice colt replacement slide on a colt 1924 transition frame and all the parts match to a 1943 colt. We are both very happy and got what we wanted plus know that the CMP will use the money wisely. If your going to go the auction route don't wait, no matter the gun they keep going up. The CMP hasn't had back to back auctions in a while either, they will list one week and the next week or two will not list anything. I don't know what that means but I do know the last few auctions have been rough. I will add that the CMP posts good pictures and a nice check list of parts so what I did was make a spreadsheet and input the parts of the gun I was interested in and then looked them up in the books I have and put beside the part the details, date, if it was correct for either the slide or frame etc. Then I chose one and bid until I won. I knew what I wanted to spend for that particular gun and then added $100 to it for extra bidding because I did not want to get out bid by $1. Both times I got the gun for under what I wanted to spend. |
