Default Looking For My Personal Unicorn

I am trying to find the very first M1 Garand that was issued to me 65 years ago. The serial number is 2271913; and it is a SA garand. I made a post in the new member section with a little more detail; but I am guessing more people read this section of the forum. Here's the link to my original post: http://forums.thecmp.org/showthread.php?t=219256

Any help in this search would be greatly appreciated.

Did a quick search of your serial number on this site without a hit. Might still be out there but no one has listed it. I don't list mine.

You can email the CMP and ask if they have it in inventory, not sure if they waive the fee for vets in this situation but it’s worth asking. It’s a needle in a haystack but every once in a while it happens. Good luck!

Good read while you search.

According to DoD records that rifle was demilled / destroyed in 1994.

Is there a public list of all S/N M1 Garands destroyed? If so, can you share it please.

Thanks for the info, RT. Even though it wasn't what I was hoping for, at least it came pretty quickly and settled the issue without having to get my hopes up for nothing. I would have hoped for a happier ending for the weapon; but I am sure there are others that need a good home.

I would also be very interested in the answer to the questions asked by Pederson.

FOIA requests sometimes works, have deep pockets to pay for any large lists. Lists from pre-1980 are no longer available that I know of, otherwise I know of no public lists.

These lists are not 100% foolproof.

Agreed! My Dad's is listed on the M1 Garand list under "Private Owner." It appeared there sometime after I started posting that I was looking for it. I was told that some people like to "help" by adding the SNs to the database as false hope.

Still, I'll keep looking until I find it, find out it was destroyed or my son picks up the hunt when I take the Great Dirt Nap.
