Default P14 and M17 Rifles

I own a Model 1917 in 30'06. I'm reluctant to own a Pattern 14 in .303 because I'm afraid I'd mix the two and place the wrong cartridge in the wrong rifle.

To those who have both, what is the risk of blowing up a rifle by placing, say, a 06 cartridge in a P14 or a 303 cartridge in a M17?

It's a small risk. If you have some doubt about your ability to discern the difference between the rifles, get a broad tip sharpy and write the calibers on the buttstock or paint one of the rifles a different color.

Thanks, Jerry. All good suggestions. What I am wondering is will a M17 chamber and fire a 303 and will a P14 chamber and fire a 30'06?

I'd say no. I believe the cartridges are different enough to prevent that. I've owned both but have not had the opportunity to mix them up. I've fired .308 in a 30-06, so I'm not immune to mixing up calibers.

Exclamation

The rims are so much different you would have to blind or drunk to mix them up. I'm certain an M17 would never chamber nor the bolt close on a 303 cartridge because of the size of the rim. a 303 rim is .540 and a 30-06 is .473.

A 30-06 case is too long to fit in a 303 Brit chamber by about .16" at the shoulder and the case head diameter is .010 larger. The bolt would never close on a 30-06 case.

Even a 308 round, which is probably short enough, would have to deal with the rim size and case head diameter. The bolt won't close.

I own one of each and agree with lapriester. You can try and mix up the ammo but you won't be successful in closing the bolt although you might manage to jam a round in the chamber if you have gorilla strength.

If it's a concern you can always do what the Brits did and put some red paint on the handguard of the 1917 rifle, or maybe a dab of nail polish on the receiver ring, etc.

If one can’t tell the difference, I suggest one take up a different hobby!

Default Or ...

I sympathize with the OP, especially as eyes get more tired each day.

But before painting a rifle handguard (or painting its nails with nail polish ), I have seen others get a very wide (2-3") brightly colored rubber band and just slip it on the handguard or stock. It is easily removable for later resale. You could always use a Sharpie to write the caliber on the rubber band. Thanks.

Ive always liked the P14/17 rifles...built like a tank, have both. Ive found the .303 round is more accurate shooting both rifles ( Both rate VG to exc cond) at 200 Yds. Of course the Rear sight is a issue for windage. As far as interchanging ammo ....NO WAY...you would have to BEAT the round in.
