Simple answer: if you don't want to mark the rifles in a conspicuous place, use the stripper clips.

The '14 takes the wide-frame SMLE/#4 stripper, the '17 the Mauser-style '03. Don't forget, you CAN get a sixth .30 Caliber M1906 in the '17.

It's embarrassing to fumble around, but chambering the wrong round would be very difficult.

Makes funny looking brass if you shoot 308 in 30-06. You can't load 30-06 ammo in a 308.
