Default Markings on my 1917 bolt?

What is the W below the ordinance mark on my Eddystone bolt handle? I posted a second picture of the underside of the bolt that has the normal Eddystone E mark.

Any help is appreciated.

I speculate that the "E" marking is spurious, applied by a previous owner so that the bolt would "match."

I got the rifle from the CMP. I can’t see a VFW or American Legion doing that, but I could be wrong.

I concur. I do not see a VFW or American Legion post doing it either. And I can assure you that I didn't do it at the CMP. The stamp may have been applied at an arsenal during overhaul to make it "match."

For what it's worth.

Just curious, what's incorrect about the E? Asking because the E stamp on my bolt is near identical to his. Mine has a U instead of the W next to the ordinance bomb. Thanks

I've seen "E" bolts with A, C, W,U,and Y. There is currently one listed in the forum with a Q. Anyone know the significance of these stamps?

Duff’s book just says that Eddystone rifles have various letters and numbers stamped on the top of the bolt handle. No reference to meaning.

Anyone know what's wrong with the E stamp on the OP bolt?

Regarding the letter stamps on the top of the handle, I tried to find out what they were for a few years ago but never found anything conclusive, possibly inspection stamps.
