Default M1 Helmet Identification: Did I Get a Fake?

Hello all! I bought this helmet with a liner, Mitchel pattern cover, and cover strap. It looks the part and that's really what matters to me in this particular helmet.

However, I noticed it was fixed and not swivel bale. One bale stands kore vertically than the others. Then when I removed the cover and liner, it looked like it had no rim at all. And, the chinstrap can not be fastened around the backside if the helmet. At this point, I am assuming I have a knockoff steel pot.

Did the US ever make fixed bales like this with short straps? Is this from another country's military? Did I get a commercially made lookalike?

Thanks for your time! Album linked below

It's fine, albeit very sloppily repainted. I think the rim is still there, it's just buried under loads of paint. It is not uncommon for chinstraps to not be long enough to secure to one another on the backside of the helmet, especially on the earlier fixed bale variants. It also appears that one of the bales has been slightly bent which is the reason that they do not appear to be angled symmetrically.

Thank you for the response, it is interesting to think that I may have an older helmet.

It may be wise to keep everything together. Judging by the looks of the helmet and your description of the cover and band, you may have an original (not pieced together) Vietnam era set.
