Yes, the ram needs to be clean, as all the primer debris from decapping seems to collect at the press/ram juncture. Not sure grease is advisable on a press just to avoid any possible contaminants in the process, and because the same debri would collect even more so in the grease . Graphite or MolyD spray, would be a better choice IMO.

I use Mobil 1 10W-30 to oil the rams on my Lyman and Dillon presses.

Wipe, apply, load. I wipe and relube every few thousand rounds, or when I remember.
