From the Jouster pages / Culvers Shooting Pages:

http://www.jouster.com/forums/showth...77E-Trench-gun

The 77E was never received from Stevens/Savage, with the heat shield, TRUE. However while working as a Small Arms Repairman, 45B20, in Viet Nam 67-68, I did add some heat shield/bayonet attachments to some 77Es, belonging to a MP unit we supported. A 77E with a heat shield ordered thru the Army Supply System and added under a legit work order,,, would that make it “correct”. IIRC, we used the heat shield for the Stevens 520, I think. So maybe this one is “correct”,, well maybe. Maybe Cecil can ask DA if they still have the DA Form 2407s that covered those 77Es. Someone did use the word “fantasy”,, right???

Cecil
“The Gun Collector” Vol.4 had a vary good article covering the 77E, I will send you the exact title and author tomorrow, you can probably get a copy on eBay or Abe Books. I still have my US issued manual for the 77E and dated July 1963, no heat shields are discussed or illustrated. A copy of this manual is available thru ‘Nicolaus Associates’. Your only hope is maybe a MWO was issued to add a heat shield to the 77E sometime in its short Army career. However none of my DA 310-7s indicate one was issued to that effect. My Supply Catalog 1005/35-Il-1, Weapons and date 29 Aug 1975 list five different Shotguns, one of which is the 77E. It is listed as: NSN 1005-00-952-4063, SHOTGUN, 12 GAGE, ROIT TYPE: Stevens, M77E, WITH OUT bayonet band assembly,,, this is from page 147.

Opinion: Your 77E was ’put-together’ after it left US Military service.

Now I have to tell you a little story.

I was at the OGCA show some years ago, and while waiting in the lobby of the IX Center for the gates to open, I spy a bayonet adaptor in a guys backpack. So I approach him and ask if it is for sale. He takes it out, and it is the type in the photo that the OP posted, that takes the M5 bayonet.
So I tell him hey, that is not original GI.
And he tells me:

"IT SURE IS. IT WAS ON MY 77E IN NAM, AND I TOOK IT OFF AND TOOK IT HOME WITH ME, NOW I AM HERE LOOKING FOR A 77E TO PUT IT ON"

Now I can not speak to the truth of the statement, but that's about as close to the horses mouth as one can get."

I am sure you could. My problem was even though a Old Stevens 620 is not a particuliarly rare collector Firearm, I did not want to cut my Original 620 Barrel.

My buddy who has a ton of old Gun parts had a complete 520 or 620 barrel assembly that had a rusty front part on the barrel. So in my case I did not have to cut my original barrel and can swap back to my 30 inch original barrel in a about 10 seconds....

I would not have done it if I would have had to cut my original serial number matching Stevens barrel..Heck heres what I did. I still have to figure out the swivels yet.

Kinda always wanted a Trenchgun, but could never afford a original one or cared to spend the Money on one even if I could. My barrel is 20 inches long on my homemade trench one..
