There is only one type of 15 round magazine body. It is the bottom plate that is different and there are five type of those.

Riesch states on p. 138 that the Type 1 to Type II floorplate change was made near the end of 1943.

But Reisch calls the fifth version of the floor plate a type II, neglecting the second, third and forth variations.

The adoption of the type II floor plate, the flat one with nubs at the back, likely occurred in late 1942 or early 1943. Some manufacturers kept making the type I and type II plates even after the type III/IV and even the type V plates were in production so there is no real answer to when a transition took place.

would it have been possible to see an "I.I. in circle" w/a indented floor plate and an "IR in circle" w/ an indented floor plate or were thr floor plates just swapped or switched out at some point?

Magazines marked with I.I. in circle were made with type I (flat) , type 2 (flat with nubs at the rear) and type V ( indented) base plates. The type I plates will be marked I.I. in circle on the inside.

Mags marked IR in circle were made with type I and type V base plates with the type I plates also having IR in circle on the inside.

thanks for the clarification. my "Reisch" book states that type 2 mags were identical to type 1 except for the reinforcing ridge or indent on the floor plate. I know that reference books aren't always gospel so it's good to get some expert opinions.

I didn't realize that both type 1 and 2 plates were flat and that type 2 had nubs.

The type III and type IV are likely just manufacturer specific variations since none of the magazine manufacturers made both a type III and a type IV base plate.
