    Karl,

Yep, that's an early one but not the very earliest. Great find, they are tough.

Really hard to pin that down but 35,ooo mid-range gas traps begin to show them, GCA Journal, Summer 2010, has a couple nice benchmark rifles 85,ooo & 95,ooo (11-40 bbls) that have them.

          20,000+ thru 200,000+

Earlier Windage knobs had an open arrow ( which is straight on Springfields but have been noted down as being flared but they were actually straight - Winchester used flared arrows not straight )
Later Windage knobs are a mix between checkard and knurled knobs for a bit .

The above link is to one for sale here, priced at $215. I had to give $200 for one recently, surprised me since the last one I bought about 20 years ago was $25. Not a very common part.

It's interesting that the very fine checkering is a early trait but the closed arrow on the windage knob is found after 20k serial range.

And there are fakes out there too so photos are mandatory before you buy. This one has no photos.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing. Got pictures of the one I bought and got it from a long established member here, it looks right to me. Lots of fakes out there.
