It's a combination of poor lighting and your camera's software trying to correct the picture.

So OP,

You're gonna love this. A local and Big gun show comes twice a year to a fire Dept just down the road. A gun shop from God knows where used to have two fuggly Garands. The stocks where Poly ed to the point they looked liked bowling alley lanes!! They were both WWII era SA mix masters and both sold for $1,500 SOLID. I inspected both as best as I could because I couldn't field strip them, for fear that I would screw them up and who would pay for them? I almost called his bluff to see his face. Then I asked HIM to filed strip it in front of me. He said NO. I asked WHY? Aren't YOU a GUNSMITH?? He said he didn't have enough time because a Garand takes a LONG time to field strip!! Oh, by the way the first time I met this gunsmith I told him that the fore-stock of both Garands were rock solid and should have a little play in them. He proceeded to tell me that HE was the gunsmith not me and knew what he was doing. So I stored that into the back of my carnivorous head. Fast forward a year and a half, a friend of mind sends me a text message of a pic of a nice Garand at the table of this guy, he wants my advice. By the time I saw it he had already bought it. I met him at the range. He had a beautiful late number SA with a sweet LMR barrel! The rifle sold for hundreds less than the two fuggly ones and you guessed it. The forearm stock is a little loose at just the right amount!! Ain't Karma a bit*h?

Got back in the States early and went to work stripping the Garand. The only part not period correct is the triggerguard. It is supposed to have the stamped guard with milled hook. even better is the bore is cleaning up.

Just been working on it a short while and it's already getting shine. Got out the TE gauge and TE is at 1.5. (guy at the shop said it was a 5)
