Default 30-06 Extractor Grooves and Enblocs, Compatibility

I've been going through my ammo, clips, and brass, 30-06, that I use for Garands, and am curious about extractor grooves and clips. Alot of what I shoot is HXP.
  • HXP went from the typical 30-06 groove to the 308 groove in the mid 70s or so.
  • Is there any compatibility issues with these grooves and clips?
  • Are there any combinations that are known not to work?

I haven't had any problems, but I'm cleaning out my brass and may cull some of what I have. Curious.

Thanks so much

Seems the older ammo with smaller grove didnít work well with the newer mid-70ís clips and aec. My uncle has some late 60ís hxp that came in boxes and wouldnít work in the aec clips that he got with first Garand order. I tossed him a couple of USGI clips ran fine. I have some older Lake City brass that doesnít work with the L&H 78 foreign clips that came on my late 70ís HXP.

Have sorted my loose HXP and have/had been shooting 78 HXP with AEC clips without a problem. I do hit my clips with gun oil and #0000 steelwool to smooth the heavy park both inside and outside.

I believe the HXP changed over in 1973.

Some of the newer clips are designed for the 308 cartridge extractor cut in that cartridge and work fine with the newer HXP that has that larger extractor cut like the 308. The older 30-06 or most commercial has a narrow groove and the older clips work fine for that. Most folks just use the older usgi because it works fine for both extractor groove designs.

30-06 HXP extractor groove size
1972 small (30-06 type) and earlier
1973 large (308 type) and later

The extractor cut change was done in 1972. You can find '72 dated HXP with both the large (7.62 Nato) and the small (M2) cuts. That large cut can cause problems in a 1903A3 at times.
