I always used to want rifles where I did not have to pay for the firewood.

Your rifle, Smith-Corona M'03-A3, S/N 3641449 with original 4-groove S C/2-43 barrel, was one of fourteen rifles I inspected at the CMP on 7 Sep 2018. According to my notes, your rifle had been arsenal-overhauled and re-assembled from mixed parts. The rifle exhibited an "RA" overhaul inspection stamp in the butt. I further noted that I replaced the bolt in your rifle.

Unless the stock is in poor condition or is coated with varnish or shellac, I would not recommend refinishing it. And I would certainly not recommend sanding or obscuring any existing markings.
Thanks Abeal, nice report from Mr Beard. I like how he keeps notes on his work.

Hello Abeal,

I started this thread and would be curious to know if Mr Beard had examined the 1903 I had purchased. Could you be kind enough to let me know how to get in contact with him?

Thanks,

Joe

reaper36a, check the hang tag and confirm there is the initials "JB" for inspector, that will tell you that John Beard inspected the rifle.
If he did inspect it send him a PM with the SN and date inspected on the tag.

Nice rifle, maybe slightly nicer than mine, but mine is close. What day did he inspect it? I got a response from John Beard. He said that mine was substantially original when he started on it, but he had to replace the stock and front sight.. He was surprised that mine just sold on Friday, as he inspected and logged it on the 26th of January 2018.

Looks like he inspected it on 5 OCT 18. I have not heard from him as I figured he is a busy man.

I believe John Beard is the only one who has inspected 1903’s for several years now. If you send him a PM he will reply, giving you info on the condition of your rifle the day he inspected it. Very unique and outstanding chance to see how original or rough it was before it came to you.

There is at least another one...."PS" on the hang tag.

Your rifle was inspected by a good friend, Princeton Soh. He sometimes goes with me and inspects rifles also. He and I work together at the same work bench directly across from each other and use the same tools. He, unfortunately, does not keep any notes about the rifles he inspects.
