Default Winchester stock with channel numbers

M1 Winchester Stock with channel numbers
Looking at a stock I believe (far from an expert) is a long channel Winchester. The channel length is 2 1/8 long, V shaped notch for the trigger guard, numbers on the ferrule (228 and perhaps 128). The horseshoe and horseshoe notch looks right. It appears to have been through a rebuild, based on the sanding and the P, no serifs and no circle on the bottom of the grip. My questions are, is it a Winchester and has anyone ever seen the numbers 1536 stamped in the channel. It has spaces between the 1 the 5 and the 3, the 3 and 6 are together. Would be very interested in opinions on this.

It certainly looks like a Winchester stock. As far as the numbers in the channel, my guess is either the last 4 of the serial number? Maybe someone was trying to make it look like an Overton stock?

I do have Danish returns that have the full serial number under the butt stock, and in the barrel channel. I also have some National Match stocks that have the last 4 written in white marker in the barrel channel (maybe they stamped the last 4 at some point).

No, it is not an Overton. It is a Winchester stock. As far as the numbers in the channel go, I have no idea why they are there.

Absolutely nothing to the numbers. Anyone can stamp numbers like that in the channel. Winchester in no way did this so there is no mystery. It almost looks as if someone tried to fake a IHC. Rick B
