Default Barrel Vise and Action Tool

I need to get a set and there's several different types available on eBay.

I'd love to hear the opinion of you experienced Garand guys.

I am looking at this set. I like the action wrench because it uses the receiver legs rather than the top of the receiver like the CMP action wrench.

Just kidding of course (looks to be the same seller), but there are 18 pages of comments in the link I posted.

If you know a welder and have access to materials this would be cheaper and just as good. If you have a 13-16" Crescent you could get away with only buying a $69 barrel vise with multiple inserts for a variety of barrels.

This vise. Been using one of these for 10 years. Excellent quality. Just request a set of Garand bushings from Wally when you order.

Well that's reassuring! I guess I picked out the right one.

I saw that one too and I was going to buy before I spotted the set with the vise and action wrench. I think the design of that wrench is pretty cool. When I get to the point where I start getting into M1 Carbines and 1903's it will come in handy.

a large adjustable crescent wrench w/taped jaws works great and is cheap at harbor freight.
the vise w/aluminum inserts works great and is certainly priced right.

You definitely don't need form fitting action wrenches. That's truly a waste of money. You just need one with enough heft for difficult installs and disassembly. The original CMP version was the best ever made and it was a huge simple brute.

And a big a$$ Crescent with a cheater served me well for the first few barrel changes I did with no receiver damage utilizing aluminum from a cut up soda can. I tried to avoid beer when Gunsmithing. ;-)

There have been times when the brute and an additional cheater has been required so judge what you buy by that consideration. Possible slippage, insecure attachment. Believe me, keep it simple and your life will be simpler.
