Pretty much all my ammo that isn't in my range bags is in metal ammo boxes or spam cans. And it is in my unfinished concrete block basement not near any source of ignition. So that is something.
But I was thinking about building a locker for it, basically a foot locker or food pantry sized box or two made out of durock cement board.

What do you think, good idea? Overkill? Not good enough?

Doesn't answer your question, but years ago I remember the fire department standing back and watching my uncle's barn burn because of small arms ammunition cooking off. I am storing my clipped ammo in my closet to keep it in a cooled/heated space rather than my shop or garage. I have friends who have constructed magazines in their storm cellars which are pretty temperature stable and fire proof.... course it helps to have a storm cellar
