It is a government contract barrel - probably chrome lined. What does it say on the barrel lugs? That will point you to the company that made it as they were manufactured by different companies, but all using the same government specs. One side should say M and P - the M stands for Magnaflux testing and the P is for Proof. The other lug will say SW for Smith and Wesson, or maybe 73677 for the Duroyd Mfg. Co., or maybe something else.

This is not to pick on Dan13 at all but I have always wondered about this. Seems whenever we see an "MP" it is claimed that this stands for Magnaflux and Proof. Is this documented anywhere? My thought is that the "MP" stands for "magnetic particle" testing, which is what Magnafluxing is. Magnaflux is a commercial name, a brand of magnetic particle testing equipment, similar to using the term "Kleenex" generically for all brands of facial tissue. By the way, in a former life I operated a metallurgical laboratory and we had Magnaflux equipment. Used it on many occasions.

Your thoughts, anyone?

MP is magnetic particle. The M16 series barrels are marked that way to this day along with the Beretta M9. TM advises that MP is Magnetic Particle.

Rapid86 - no offense taken at all. This is info I have read on multiple internet sites, but as we all know, many times wrong info is regurgitated many times (like my post). I appreciate the correction and now I am the more knowledgeable for it.

I read the C in a box is Colt made. When I was looking for a NOS drop in USGI those were going for a premium. I ended up with a great NOS Duroyd barrel to swap out my 1918 barrel with to preserve it. Fit like a glove. Congrats on yours.
