The M1 Rifle is inherently a more accurate rifle than an M14/M1A. This is a proven fact. We should have never adopted the M14. The FAL beat the M14 in every test and is a much better battle rifle. Colonel Studler really screwed NATO when he forced the adoption of the 7.62x51mm cartridge as the standard then backed out on the adoption of a common rifle for all troops. And we wonder why the Europeans take a dim view of some of our policies. Lots of history behind that.

I've googled the topic in the past, and while some folks do say the M1 is more accurate, the majority seem to give the nod to the M14 at most distances, with the M1 perhaps a bit more accurate further out.
