Dad and I made the trip from Ne Pa. two May's ago. Over 9 hours each way. Dad was a Marine who served in WW2 as well as during the Korean Conflict and absolutely swears by the Garand. Unbeknownst to him, the rifle that we were buying that day was going to be his and they found a Dandy for us. An Air Force rebuild SA with a barrel in the white and virtually new overall with a CMP Walnut stock. Bob spent a lot of time with us and is a decent man to boot. Go, but give a call ahead and see whats on the floor. You may be pleasantly surprised friend.

Might want to give yourself a few hours extra each way right now and 4 wheel drive capability if you plan on coming in the near (the next week or so) future... More snow here than we've seen since 1978.

My dad and I drove right at 800 miles one way to go and we had a great time. Stayed in a motel right on the lake and hit the store first thing in the morning.

My trip to the SS was 11 hours or so from East Texas when I lived there...and it was totally worth it! At the time(2008 or so), there weren't any SG rifles available but tons of FG rifles and carbines. With the shape store inventories are in, I'd probably skip on another trip. With that being said, if you've never been, you should go at least once. Regardless of stock, it'll be a memorable trip!

I really Promised My Son that We would have one before the Appleseed event in March but it's not looking like it's going to happen so I was planning to Drive from Virginia (DC Area) to North Store.. Would this be a wasted trip?

It's 454 Miles, in a 2005 Mustang GT350 Performance built car (14 MPG)
7 hours up and 7 hours back (900 Miles total) 200.00 in gas
I drove to the north store no less than 5 times last year. I may be going again if you need an agent. To answer your question though....Yes I would.

We just got back. Lots of HR's and sniper grades. They still have a few service grade SI's and HR 's, A friend almost came home with a HR but the 3 of us ended up with 3 cans of HXP and a can of AP each, 1000 rds of .40, 3 leather slings and I found a walnut M14 stock for 35.00 . The CMP Store is great as are the people ,we had a lot of laughs. Take him, it will be a good time for you both but as far as you have to come I would call first. It's only 2 1/2 hours for us so we just roll. Good Luck , Dan

Considering the New Order Timeline I'd say it's your best chance to fulfill your promise. Take your son. Lifetime of memories are well worth it.

+1 on renting a gas miser on the cheap.

+11 on increasing your purchase once there. Buy a great gun (SGS), some ammo, and maybe something for yourself.

Check "abeal's" 2/8/2014 North Store Report post. Might want to ping him on the HRA SGS's he saw there.

Have a good trip and report back - with pics !!!
