Default Is Greek 30-06 OK for M1?

I had shot a service rifle match 5-6 years ago and one of the guys was using an M1 (as was I) with what I belive was Greek surplus. I was using LC M2 surplus. He gathered quite a crowd, his muzzle blast was much louder with a visible (in daylight) fireball. For those that have and are currently using Greek ammo, is there any potential problems with it in an M1?

They have sold a few million rounds of it through the CMP. I have shot my share of it too. It is a little hotter than the LC stuff, but it shoots good.

No, it is not safe. Everyone that purchased some from the CMP should send it to me and I will dispose of it.

you need to distinguish between OLYMPIC (Greek) ammo and HXP (Greek) Surplus ammo. From all accounts, the Olympic (which CMP also apparently sold for a time also) was pretty crappy stuff.

HXP (in Greek alphabet of course) = Greek Powder & Cartridge Company, Athens, Greece
H = Eta, X = CHI, P = Rho.

I think it was Greek surplus (I'm about 80% sure), there is a small chance I've remembered wrong It could have been Korean, but again I'm pretty sure it was Greek. I've noticed many people are using the HXP and just wanted to make sure it would be OK to use in an M1. However, from that time period, I do not remember any HXP descriptions on that ammo. It may well have been a different maker/type. I am gaining a little more confidence about using the HXP, when I get to the SS I will probably pick some up just to try. I assume it is non-corrosive, is this correct?

I'm sure the stuff you remember was the Olympic, and the CMP sold it at one time, I got some. was kind of fun to shoot, fire ball and all. big report too, lot of fun. not really for M-1's but it didn't seem to hurt anything. the newer HXP is for a Garand, shoots good and NOT corrosive.

Began shooting garands and HXP this year, thanks to the CMP. Never had any "fireballs" come outta my garands!
Don't have anything to compare it to, but for surplus military ammo I've shot it out to 600 yards, and am impressed at it's accurracy.

The current HXP is as safe as any controlled explosion in an M1 in good condition.

That matches my experience with the Olympic that was issued at a Garand match some years ago.
