Default Got my first CMP M1 on Good Friday

Ordered my first m1 from the cmp on the 22 of January and it showed up Good Friday. Ordered an HRA SG and requested USGI wood. I couldn't be have been any happier when I opened the case and found my M1. The rifle is is all HRA except for the bolt and trigger group, they are SA. Original barrel with +1 on throat and muzzle.

Now that's a score, for a # of reasons. Make's me wish I had included a USGI wood request on at lease one of the SG's I have on order.

Enjoy the rifle and let us know how it shoots.

Nice looking Springfield stock on your rifle. I'd be very happy with that.

Can I ask how do you know it's a Springfield stock? I've been trying to figure it out. A lot of what I read said that, that cartouche a long with the circled P it has could be hra. M1's are brand new to me though.

I'm hoping to take my 82 year old grandfather out shooting with it. He hasn't shot one since Korea.

He's probably looking at the "back porch" - that portion of the stock immediately behind the heel of the receiver. On SA's, the porch is relatively small, while on HRA's the porch is noticeably bigger. Also, the "P" proof on an SA stock is in a serif font like this:

P

Whereas the P on a HRA (or IHC stock) is in a sans serif font like this:

P

Very nice rifle!

You're welcome. It's a very nice stock aside of that gouge caused by the rear sight on the rifle sitting next to yours during shipment. If you're interested in making your rifle all HRA, you could probably find someone to swap stocks with. Just be aware there are two HRA stocks - early (with a small DOD eagle-and-stars cartouche) and late (with a bigger DOD cartouche). I don't recall when the transition period took place, but I'm sure someone else will chime in with that info.

If I'd gotten that rifle, I'd be ticked pink! USGI stocks are rather scarce lately, with perhaps one out of every four SG M1's coming from the CMP bearing such a stock.

A little steam will help that gouge but won't remove it. You will end up with a crescent moon there but steam will raise it. If you choose to refinish it. Nice Rifle!
