Default Mann Barrel Project

I was just reading another post in which someone had a question about no drill (S&K) scope mounts. Not wanting to hi-jack that thread, thought I'd post my observations here.
The hardest part of my .308 Mann Barrel project was finding a gunsmith willing to tap the receiver. Finally, one of them recommended the S&K mount, with the sage advice that "someday an un-touched 03-A3 receiver may be worth some money."
Not wanting to tie a LOT of money into a barrel that might not perform, I used a $150 Numrich 1903 Sporter stock, milled a BUNCH of wood out of the barrel channel, and glass bedded the action. I also added a $59 Timmney trigger and a $19 cheek pad.
The scope was as cheap as I could find in a 10X36 ($400 Bushnell) but performs well. Good scopes in that power are REALLY expensive!!
I figure I can upgrade to a better stock or scope when money permits. The S&K mounts performed flawlessly and allows me to return to original CMP condition should I want to.
The only person to out-shoot me in a recent 1000 yard match was using a $4000 bench rest rifle......
If you just have to have a scope on a 1903 (or many other old military rifles) check out C&K.

Wow, now thats a rifle! Very cool indeed. How does the C&K mount attach if it doesn't require tapping?

Nice. What load are you shooting in it?

The front pulls down on a band clamped around the receiver, the rear clamps to the rear sight base and also pulls the front base rearward. Very stout. Google S&K scope mounts... they describe it better.

So far it seems to favor lighter loads. Hornady Custom 150gr SST are the best I've found. Haven't tried working up my own ...yet.

Is that a C&K mount or an S&K mount?

Thanks!

S&K is correct. Thanks for correcting that.

I also have a Mann but haven't had an opportunity to fire beyond 100 yards. Anyway, it's a tack driver at 100 with some of my loads.

Does the rifle feed in the standard way, using the bolt and magazine, without modification, or did you have to have a gunsmith modify the barrel?

I've been thinking about one of these for awhile!
