Default Remington 700 on Auction - Why $4500

I don't get it. CMP is selling a Remington 700 on Auction and its already over $4500.

Is this a verified sniper rifle from VietNam?

could be any number of reasons ... use your wildest imagination. Maybe two guys were issued one like it when in the service and they're having a bidding war. Could be an early sniper model. Could be a guy has a consecutive number - that'd drive me over the edge. ( I have several "pairs" of CMP rifles). There are some other theories up in the Auction section. Those and people here tend to bid wildly as the $$$ go to fund the CMP Programs.

Kind of goofy with it being "sold as is" and "it appears to fire the .308 Win. round." Just be glad you aren't the fool shelling out the money.

Yes in that stock. Someone put a buttpad on it but it is legit. The only "fool" is the uninformed that doesn't recognize what it is.

Well then one would expect that fact to have been disclosed in the auction. Especially an auction staged by the CMP. At least that is what this fool would have been looking for in justifying the outrageous price. Right?

How do you identify it as such? Is there a serial number list? This rifle is SN 6257223.

Since 2014 the CMP has sold three other rifles with similar serial numbers:

M40 - SN 6257208 - .308 Win

USAMU - SN 6257246 - 6mmBR

USAMU - SN 6257229 - 6mmBR

Were the two USAMU rifles also, at one time, M40s?

Not challenging you - interested in learning.

I'm uninformed, how do you know it's a M40

So the M40 wasn't only issued to the USMC. It was issued to Navy and Army. Look at the stock, no checkering, the clip slotting with the thumb relief, and the US roll mark. I don't necessarily believe it was USMC. I think it was probably Army or Navy.
Also the CMP has been auctioning off a lot of AMU and Navy stuff but it hasn't disclosed that is where its from. The only way to verify was the serials.
